Top 5 Places for Ice-Cream Maniac
Almost everyone loves ice cream, though some may love it more than other people do. Those people ranges from people who love it every day and those who eat it once in a while. That’s why today, I’m going to introduce you to my top 5 places for ice cream lovers:
#1 Dairy Queen Cambodia
Dairy Queen, most people just call it DQ, is the most affordable ice cream in this list. The taste of their ice cream isn’t bad either, and that’s why it is in my list. Last time, I have introduced you in a combo set with Aeon’s cafeteria lunch without explaining to you guys how it tastes. So now I’m going to give you guys a taste review of the cone ice cream that I have mentioned.
The cone ice cream is the most basic and cheapest ice cream in DQ. You can buy it with just plain ice cream on cone or coated it with chocolate with an extra price. For the taste, I can say that it is really a quality ice cream as the ice cream itself is perfectly balance in taste.
It isn’t too sweet or have too much of a strong flavor; It just have a middle level of sweetness with the taste of milk in it. Well it did happen to me though, if you wonder. However, the bad point about DQ is that they don’t provide us enough choice of flavors which limit our choice in choosing the ice cream.
Price range: $1 – $4
Location: Riverside, Phnom Penh International Airport, TK Avenue, Aeon Mall, Pencil Super Center Chaktomuk
#2 Swensen’s Cambodia
Now, if you want more flavors and a similar price range, Swensen is your kind of choice. Swensen provides you more than 20 flavors; Well, I didn’t exactly count how many, but it’s true that Swensen has a lot of flavors for you to choose. For further understanding about their taste, let me just give you an example of the new Kiwi flavor that is in under promotion period.
For the newly introduced Kiwi flavor is kinda fresh compare to the others. It tastes exactly what a perfect Kiwi would taste like; it is sour and kinda sweet at the same time. And the moment you put it into your mouth, you will get a creamy taste in your mouth which is perfect with the Kiwi flavor.
There are also some flavors that I particularly don’t like as well, especially the chocolate flavors. It’s not like that I dislike chocolate; It’s just that the chocolate flavor at Swensen is kinda too sweet for me and makes my throat hurts the next day every time after eating the chocolate flavors. Well, it might suit your taste better than me, so go try it out.
Price: $2 - $10
Location: Aeon Mall, Sovanna Shopping Center, Sonthomuk (near ACE SM branch), Street 105 in front of Apsara Phnom Penh Hospital
#3 Toto Ice Cream
For this third choice is a little bit different from the 2 above. Toto Ice Cream is a little unique from what I have mentioned that you can feel that the taste of their ice cream is definitely homemade. The flavor that I like most at Toto is their Strawberry flavor.
When eating it, you can taste something little and a bit crunchy, which I assume it’s the black things outside the strawberry. Also, the taste feel genuine as it taste like a real Strawberry unlike other Ice Cream shops’ which feel like their flavor is a bit too milky.
The downside of Toto Ice Cream is that their ice cream is kinda expensive and the proportion of ice cream that they serve is too little compare to other ice cream shops. If you’re into quality over quantity, then Toto may be your choice.
Price: $4 - $10
Location: Norodom Boulevard, TK Avenue, Aeon Mall
#4 Cold Stone Creamery Cambodia
If you want to try genuine taste of American Ice Cream from a real American shop, then Cold Stone is your go to place. Cold Stone is a branch from the United States which provides many original American flavors. There are quite a lot of flavors to choose from, which makes me feel bad that I haven’t tried them all. As a cheese lover myself, I especially like their Cheesecake Ice Cream.
It does taste like a cheese cake that has turned into an ice cream. You will definitely feel like eating a cheese cake and an ice cream at the same time. For the overall taste, it is quite good because some flavors really stood out than those other Ice Cream shops provide. Though, I hate that their ice cream is a little too quick to melt, I guess we have to deal with it one way or another.
The price of Cold Stone Ice Cream is quite expensive as well. Comparing with the choices above, I think it is on par with Toto Ice Cream or even more expensive. You should definitely try it out for experience purpose, and then consider later that whether it is your type or not.
Price: from $3 up
Location: Branch 1: Kampuchea Krom (St.128) next to Asia Europe University, Branch 2: Boeung Keng Kang (BKK1) Corner of St. 51 & St. 310
#5 La Pop
The last of the list is La Pop Ice Cream Shop which is a new concept to Cambodian Ice Cream. The choices above all served Scoop-Ice Cream, whereas La Pop combines the foreign Ice Cream “Gelato” and the concept of “Khmer Stick Ice Cream” which results in their ice cream - “Gelato on Stick”.
There’re quite a bit over 10 flavors served in La Pop and all of them are made from fresh ingredients every day. I have tasted quite a few of their flavors and I can say that they all taste amazing. Let just pick one as an example, the Yogurt and Strawberry flavor. The look of this flavor is very simple, a white yogurt ice cream with half of a strawberry at the bottom of the ice cream.
Well it does look simple, but on the inside there is a big Strawberry flavor filling that, the yogurt is just a quite thin layer on the outside. For the taste, I can say that it is good. I’ve never thought yogurt and strawberry can go so well together.
The yogurt balance the taste of the strawberry ice cream that is sweet and sour. Before you know it, you are already at the last bite. La Pop Ice Cream is quickly melt as well. Maybe because they use fresh ingredient or something? Well, when you eat it, you better eat quickly or else you’ll be drinking Strawberry Yogurt instead of the ice cream.
