Sister Srey Cafe: Eat Clean, Give Back and Go Green All At Once In Siem Reap

Siem Reap is a bustling tourist destination packed with lots and lots of cafes and restaurants catering for everyone and just a few weeks ago, we found ourselves in the city for a quick escape and we couldn’t help but jump on a search engine for some interesting cafes to check out.  One of the results was Sister Srey Café and at a glance, it was just like a regular cafe but upon reading more into it, it is more than just a mere cafe.

Dubbed as “a cafe with a heart, a cafe with the desire to see change and with the ability to do so”, Sister Srey Cafe is a social enterprise that creates a supportive space to educate and empower Cambodian that was first established in 2012 in Siem Reap, Cambodia.

One of Sister Srey Cafe’s mission is to support young Khmer students who struggle to keep a balance between studying and supporting their family, and a large chunk of profit also goes to benefit APOPO which uses detection rats to track landmines for clearance. Aside from coffee and healthy drinks, Sister Srey Cafe also serve all-day organic breakfast and lunch freshly made and prepared daily using the highest quality and as chemical-free as possible. Sound tempting and wanna know what we tried at the cafe?

We opted for Avo On Toast, a vegan dish, which is basically guacamole spread on pieces of locally made bread. Served with poached eggs, cherry tomato, feta and beetroot, this makes it a very colorful and eye-catching dish and the taste definitely didn’t disappoint.  Eating clean is so much easier when it tastes as good as this! But don’t worry, there are plenty of options on the menu to pick from, be it vegan or not.

For drink, Banana Mania with local banana, fresh yogurt, milk and cinnamon was our pick. Mildly sweet and refreshing, it totally got us going a little maniac over it and you would notice that, the smoothie is served in a beautiful glass jar with a reusable bamboo straw that is also part of Sister Srey Cafe’s environmental-friendly mission. FYI, 90% of waste from the cafe is either recycled or composted.
