5 Places with Great Fried Chicken for Under $5

Though there are many fried chicken restaurants here in Phnom Penh, there are only some that are worth spending your money on. And those fried chicken restaurants all have their own unique taste and styles that set them apart from each other. Within 5$, these are the places you can go for Fried Chicken.

(This list is not based on ranking)

#1 Deluxe Chicken

Deluxe Chicken is a franchise of Taiwanese fried chicken restaurant which located around The Independent Monument. Their menu has many things: from burger to fried chicken to combo sets and so on. But their main menu is all about the fried chicken.

Their fried chicken is only the breast part and has no bone at all, unlike other joints that sell drumsticks, wings, and breasts that has bones. And it is only 1$ for the mini one which is a very good deal.

The outside part is slightly crunchy and the meat inside is very tender. The feeling is like biting into something slightly hard then go “poof” into the soft part. And it tastes very peppery and slightly spicy as well. Though the spiciness is not enough to call spicy, but we can say that it contains some heat. The taste is goodwith the peppery taste that can captivate your heart.

#2 Chickilicious

Chikilicious is also another Taiwanese fried chicken franchise that has opened in town awhile ago. They are known for their big fried chicken breast steak on a tray. Their menu ranges many variety of flavor of chicken with the price range from around $2 to nearly $4.

The good point about this is that their chicken size is huge, which is a great choice if you wanna eat a filling chicken proportion and save money at the same time. It’s tender for its breast part, though some people don’t really like the tender texture according to their reviews on the Chikilicious facebook page.

In addition, the sauce on top of the chicken is a bit salty and sour which is something you can imagine on a Taiwanese typical dish. Though there are some people who said that it is not suited to their taste and left a bitter taste at the end of the bite. Well, overall a lot of people like the taste of Chikilicious’s chicken, you should try yourself first and see if the taste suits you or not.

#3 KFC

KFC is one of the most famous fried chicken franchise in the world. And this is due to their special fried chicken which has a special recipe to make it by Mr. Kentucky. Unlike the previous 2 restaurants above which only sell the breast part of the chicken, KFC sells all the parts including Breast, Wings, and Drumsticks.

KFC’s chicken tastes good despite the bad reputation throughout the years. The crust part is orange and crunchy, and the meat inside is juicy. However, the downside of this chicken is a bit oily which is not very good if you’re a little concerned on that. But overall, the taste is good, and definitely it is worthy of being the most famous fried chicken franchise.

#4 Gogos

All of you probably know that Gogos is a restaurant that mainly sell Korean street food, but recently they have started selling Korean-style fried chicken on their menu as well. The combo of their boneless chicken breast in large piece on a tray with chips and rice is a perfect dish to eat with other 2 or 3 people because the proportion is a lot that you probably cannot finish it alone, at the price of 9$.

The Korean style sauce that coated on the fried chicken is the main hero of the dish. It is very spicy and sweet and sour at the same time. It may sound weird, but it is quite addicting and I’m talking about the “Sweet & Spicy” flavor by the way. You may want to go and check out the flavor I ate or choose any other flavor. I think they will be similarly good.

#5 Saucy

Differently from the restaurants above, Saucy is only a small joint made of container which locates in front of Gloria Jean’s IFL. They are probably one of the earliest people to bring Korean-style fried chicken to Phnom Penh.

The fried chicken that they sell is served in a paper cup in 3 sizes: small, medium, and giant. You might wonder how can fried chickens fit into a paper cup; well that is because their fried chicken is more like a chicken pop size than the actual size that the other restaurants serve.

The chicken comes in 2 different sauce: Garlic and Spicy. The garlic is a bit salty and has the good garlic scent to it, whereas the spicy one is a bit sour and spicy. As for the actual fried chicken, it is slightly crunchy and tender, but it is fast to lose its crunchiness due to the sauce. Both of the sauce are unique of their own, so try it out yourself. I bet you’ll like it either only one flavor or both.
