3 Types of Porridges that Need More Appreciation

Porridge is one of the most go-to food of many Cambodian out there of all age. From the street the vendors to family businesses that have earned the popularity from the support of our local people, Porridge remains a staple.

Typically, you would think porridge is a homogeneous product that can’t be easily distinguished because traditionally, porridge is mainly made with fish, pork, and chicken. Well, good news for you adventurous souls out there, FoodBuzz’s got you covered.

Sam Yan Porridge/ Known as “Sam Jok Porridge”

If you ever find yourself wandering around Central Market for food, don’t ever overlook the Sam Jok porridge. The “Sam Jok” porridge stall can be found among the many stalls inside the food section. You can spot the porridge place by a small banner that was manually painted.  The little setting has about 8 chairs, but the seat tends to be filled up so quickly.

“Sam Jok” porridge has a similar appearance to the Cantonese congee. The porridge has been carefully caressed in meat broth and many other Chinese spices. The chef filled up a bowl with the porridge and then proceeded on to topping the porridge with different kinds of meat. The toppings are ranging from pig organs, fried fish balls, boiled fish balls, pork, garlic chives, and ginger for a boost of flavor. You can also customize your porridge with chili, sugar, soybean, lemon, and pepper according to your own likings.

 

We’re missing something here. Hint: Something doughy, comes in a pair, and deep-fried. It’s our lovely friend, Chinese Deep-fried breadsticks. If you are a morning person, you can get the porridge with a side of freshly fried Chinese deep-friend breadsticks in various sizes. If you are the type of person who prefers porridge in the evening to morning, chances are, you will also get to buy the breadsticks, but not as fresh and warm.

Snail Porridge

Speaking of underrated eccentric food, Snail Porridge is sure one of a kind porridge that doesn’t receive enough recognition for the flavor that it possesses. The prominent green color that it showcases is a result from the Aromatic Green paste that was carefully grind with a handful of ingredients such as garlic, romdeng, lemongrass, and many other homegrown roots.

A rare Snail Porridge you is not easily find in Phnom Penh.

The snail is manually extracted from its shell to ensure conveniences while eating. To top it all off, there is also a variation of Khmer vegetables, which is complementary, that are ought to be eaten along with the porridge. This porridge is specifically recommended for all the big health buffs out there.

Frog Porridge

Another type of porridge that is sure not to be overlooked is the trendy frog porridge. This Singaporean dish has been around for quite sometime now and it’s also known to be a great hangover food for those who love to pull an all-nighter.

One thing that keeps Frog Porridge apart from other Porridges out there is that the Porridge and the Slow-cooked/braised frog are served separately. The slow-cooked fragrant frog stew takes the cake for its staggering flavor. It is sweet, gingerly, and with just the right amount of hotness. The frog is cooked to the excellence because they never fail to deliver a tender meat, however; still chewy at the same time.

 

Another thing makes this porridge stands out is the texture of the porridge. The rice is milled to an almost fine texture before it goes into the boiler. The porridge is served in a clay pot garnished with garlic chives and ginger. You can get the porridge and the stew in two options, small for 8$ for, large for 11$. We are putting it out there that you should consider ordering the large because the small portion won’t even last for 5 minutes.
