And lastly, Bak Kut Teh is something you should not miss if you visit Malaysia. Bak Kut Teh is pork in an herbal soup dish that is eaten with rice. We visited Ho Kee Bak Kut Teh at The One Mall to savor one of the best Bak Kut Teh in Phnom Penh. The Malaysia-style Bak Kut Teh comes in a thick aromatic herbal broth while the dry version is slightly stronger in taste with dark soy sauce and other ingredients like okras and chili. You can also order side dishes like You Tiao (Char Kwai), enoki mushrooms, tofu puff, or tofu skin which goes perfectly with the herbal soup. If you’re a fan of pork intestines, there are also side orders of pork stomach, intestines, liver, and kidney in herbal or pepper soup.

Next, we head to Hawaii Noodle to try the authentic Penang Char Kway Teow (Penang style fried flat noodles - $4.00). Hawaii Noodle, as the name suggests, is specialized in different types of noodles like Char Kway Teow, Penang Hokkien Mee, Mee Goreng, and Penang White Curry Noodle. The stall is located within the Good Food Foodcourt in Golden Sorya Mall and is owned and operated by the Malaysian owner. The owner, Mr. Yeap Chun Ping, has many years of experience in running a restaurant and he moved to Cambodia and started Hawaii Noodle in 2009 with all his own secret recipes. We definitely love the char kway teow here. Every bite is packed with flavor, and we definitely love the cockles and Chinese sausage in it. Be sure to be there early as the Char Kway Teow sells out very fast.

The first stop is our favorite nasi lemak place, Malaysia Hut. Located near Bassac Lane, the restaurant was established 4 years ago in Sihanoukville and moved to Phnom Penh in October 2020. It is owned and operated by all Malaysians. They have special daily menus but what we love is their nasi lemak, which comes in a few different variations. Nasi lemak is a Malaysian rice dish where the rice is cooked with coconut milk and topped with ingredients like fried anchovies, hard-boiled egg, peanuts, cucumber, and sambal. Malaysia Hut has a wide variety of nasi lemak that comes with different toppings. We first have the basic nasi lemak which they call ‘Nasi Lemak Sekolah’ ($1.00) which is smaller in portion and wrapped in banana leaf. There are also a few other variations that come with different toppings like fried chicken, curry chicken, sambal prawns, sambal squid, sambal fish, and beef rendang.
