“Moin Dot Srok Srae” translates to Roasted Farm Chicken and just the name pretty much tells you everything there is to know about this popular spot in Siem Reap, doesn’t it?
Located not too far from Angkor Wat temple, this restaurant is famed for their roasted Khmer farm chicken served on banana leaves in a classic bamboo basket and without a doubt, we had to order the set to see if it is worth the hype.
Just minutes later, the food was ready and delivered to the gorgeous wooden kiosk we were sitting at and the set also came with a basket of brown rice on lotus leaf, a very classic Khmer way of serving the rice, and a side dish of stir-fried morning glory with giblets in oyster sauce, a simple but very necessary dish because no Khmer-style roasted chickens are complete without this.
Perfect for sharing among 3-4 people, the chicken was deliciously roasted golden. With skin so glittery and meat so tender and juicy, it goes perfectly with the two choices of sauces available: chili sauce and peanut sauce depending on your personal preference but we personally preferred the chili sauce, eaten with the fresh slices of carrot and tomato.
Other than this set, we also opted for another set of roasted freshwater fish with lemongrass that was just as tender and juicy as the chicken (which is a rare case because roasted fish is usually a tad bit dry). On top of the aromatic lemongrass infused in the fish meat, you also get two choices of sauce: tamarind sauce and sour mango fish sauce. No need to contemplate and choose because both are equally delicious! Bon Appetit!
Maybe a lunch idea the next time you’re in the historic city of Angkor?
