Nom Ah Kor K'tis Yey Ra (Steamed Rice Cake with Coconut Cream): A Cambodian traditional dessert spot you must try!

Nom Ah Kor K’tis (Steamed Rice Cake with Coconut Cream) is a Cambodian traditional dessert that has been around for decades. It is a sweetened rice batter that is steamed in small cups to shape its round appearance and then is topped with thick coconut milk to add fragrance and extra flavor. Back in the old days of growing up, it was my all-time favorite dessert so I would always tell my mom to bring home some from the market from the exact spot that is being featured today.

Ah Kor K’tis Yey Ra (Steamed Rice Cake with Coconut Cream made by Granny Ra) is a street Ah Kor stall that has been in business for 30 years now, expanded to 9 branches all over Phnom Penh. The stall is now passed down to a younger generation and serves between 400-500 boxes of Ah Kor daily!

The taste of Ah Kor is a tad sweet plus the coconut sweetness and fragrance that makes the whole bite more meaningful. The Ah Kor is bouncy and when you take of bite, it is dense and soft. To me, it’s a small little dessert that brings back all the childhood air when I patiently waited for mom to return home with some Ah Kor while watching cartoons on my TV just to throw a tantrum when mom forgot to buy some because her groceries were too heavy. A definite must-try dessert and especially, from this specific stall!
