Traditional Khmer sponge cake is loved by many and is available in almost every market in Cambodia. But FoodBuzz is here to talk about the sponge cake popularized by the Taiwanese brand called Le Castella, which has gained tremendous popularity abroad​ for their light, fluffy and jiggly yet addicting taste. No wonder people are willing to queue just to get a taste!

Upon entering their place, the smell of the freshly baked sponge cake left a very strong first impression. Just the smell alone is enough to make us hungry! We got there just in time as they were cutting the big cake into smaller pieces. Remember those viral videos of jiggly yet fluffy sponge cake? They were exactly the ones in the video and it was amazing to see those with our own eyes.

Even their packaging was worth mentioning. They carefully wrapped the cake in a paper baking sheet and then packed it in their minimalist paper box. It’s very fitting as a gift to your family or loved ones.

There are 5 total flavors and the pricing starts from $6.99. We first tried the original Castella cake, super light and soft that it just melted in our mouth. When they took it out of the oven, we noticed that the outside crust is slightly toasted brown which they proceed to stamp on their iconic logo. The flavor was just right, not too sweet yet very tasty. Just one piece is enough to be shared with 3-4 people, a great dessert between friends.

We then tried the cheese flavor, all the same but this time, there are two thin layers of melted cheese inside. The cheese adds little saltiness and richness in, we recommend you to dig in when it's still hot so you can get to enjoy that savory mouthful of melted cheese flavor.

The Rocky Road is also another amazing alternative, with original cake flavor but with a twist. Lots of Australian Macadamia was baked inside and also sprinkled on top. Besides its nutritious benefits, the nuts have the crunchy chewy and nutty taste making every bite even special.

Another special flavor is literally a match made in heaven for our chocolate lovers. The taste from chocolate isn't very overpowering and it balanced the sweetness just well.

It has a special place in our hearts because there are chocolate chips in every bite.
Last but not least, we want you to try their latest pandan flavor. While it is undoubtedly soft and moist like the others, it has a very unique and appetizing aroma. We've been told that there's no artificial color being used, just the natural color strained from the pandan leaves. They also reassure us that their white chocolate was of premium quality.
