Kirakura Yakitori: Hidden pub in Phnom Penh, heaven for Japanese food lovers!

Kirakura Yakitori is a hidden spot that prides itself on its meat skewers that are growing in popularity as well as its sake. Even though it’s hidden, you can still find it rather easily. Just come to Street 246 where you will find an entrance to an alley. All you have to do is go down this alleyway and you’ll find the restaurant to your left.

Once you arrive, you’ll be greeted by an open window where you can watch the chefs grilling the skewers. Even just standing there for a moment, your stomach will start growling from the mouth-watering smell of grilled meat.

The restaurant has 2 levels - a ground floor and a mezzanine floor. As for the seating, it’s similar to a traditional Japanese bar with its low tables and seating cushions. The interior design is gorgeous. There’s upbeat Japanese music playing along with bright lights throughout the space. This makes it the perfect spot to chill and relax, especially for those who are tired from work and want to unwind with some friends or loved ones. And if you’re looking to take a photo to show off to your social media followers then Kirakura is the place for you.

Their Yakitori has up to 8 types and you can choose between two flavors, either soy sauce or salt & pepper. The meat skewers are drenched in the restaurant’s special sauce allowing the meat to be perfectly seasoned. If you’re looking to order a lot or simply want to try all the different types, you can order as a set that includes one of each.

More than this, they have some deep-fried dishes as well like their Crispy Chicken Knee that you won’t be able to stop eating and their Chicken Thigh Lollipop which uses the bone as a stick to pick up a ball of crispy chicken meat.

The Potato Spring Roll’s crispy wrapper texture contrasts well with the soft potato filling.

Seafood dishes include a Miso Clam Soup that has a savory taste from the Japanse miso and when eaten warm will soothe your soul. Another one is the Scallop Grill. The scallops are full of flavor and the texture is super buttery and slightly sweet. For those who want an extra kick, you can order the Scallop Wasabi.

They even have Spring Onion Pancake that is thin, crispy, and packed with the scent of spring onion.

The Beef Ribs are fragrant with spicy pepper. The meat has been sliced so you can try fitting 2 or 3 into your mouth at once. Even more special is their Duck Steak which is savory and goes well with some sweet, grilled carrots.

Our team also got to try some beverages which are the Strawberry Soju and the Matcha Freshy. Just hearing the name, Strawberry Soju, you can probably guess what the drink is going to be. It’s soju mixed with Sprite and fresh strawberries.

As for the Matcha Freshy, it might be a completely new and unique drink to you. It comes in two glasses - one with passion puree and one with warm matcha. You pour one into the other and when you taste it, you’ll get the sweet, sour taste of passion fruit with the fragrance of matcha as an aftertaste. It works so well together.

If you want an exciting experience with good food, don’t forget to check out Kirakura Yakitori.
